I don't know how many of you have a copy of this book, but it is indispensable. When it says it lists every make of car ever, it isn't kidding. Thousands of entries and every page has a ton of shit you've never heard of. It's fun to just open to a random page and learn about some obscure marque. So, that's what I did today and came up with a good one.

Liquid Air The Liquid Air car resembled any light steam buggy of the period, but carried a tank of liquid air under high pressure whose expansion was supposed to drive an ordinary single-cylinder steam-type engine. The efficiency of such a system has been estimated at only 4 per cent, and it is improbable that the car could have run any distance, if at all. The scheme was probably a stock promotion project.

Ah, the old car with impossible technology scam. Further research come up with this:

The men that were behind this ssheme were George Code, Boston, Milton Chase, Haverhill, and the "Genious of Two Continents", Hans Knudsen, Denmark. For an entire year, the automobile magazines were writing about this fabulous car while the men were traveling over the country selling stocks. When reporters wanted to see the factory, they were given the runaround from one location to the other. The only evdence produced was a drawing of the car. THey finally came forward with a prototype of an ordinary car. Bankruptcy soon followed with a $1.5 million dollar debt and $7,500 in assests.

And here is a photo of said car.

I was also intrigued by the other entry for a car with the name "Little." Doesn't look so small.

I may own a translation of this book. Was there a 1999ish revised version by David Burgress-Wise?

I want the audiobook version, as read by Mr. Jeremy Charles Robert Clarkson.

I think the Burgess-Wise book is similar, but different. My copy of this one is from '86 and only has Georgano's name. It's possible they eventually merged, though.

Hi there Jonee. I'm currently researching a book (see: markstevenson.org) that deals with Liquid Air engines - and was wondering where you got that second quote from ("Further research come up with this:").... I'd be really grateful if you might let me know - I'd love to read the rest.

Thanks so much.

Hi Mark. You know, I posted this so long ago, I really don't remember unfortunately. I believe whatever article it is from came up in a Google search, so I'd try Googling the quote. Good luck with the book. It's a fascinating subject.

You are a god! Strangely when I googled the quote it never came up... Seems you are a Google ninja too. Thanks. When the book comes out I'll send you a free one to say thanks. Contact me here: markstevenson.org. Thanks!
